SUPERMAN_My Heart is Broken

September 15, 2009

Despite all the hoopla surrounding the Disney-Marvel take over and the Warner- DC reorganization there are no plans, none-what-so-ever, to bring my favorite superhero back to the big screen, according to Diane Nelson, the new head of DC Entertainment. This breaks my heart.  It really does.  Despite it’s flaws, I really liked Superman Returns.  The average movie-going audience seemed to enjoy it.  I think, just like that follow up to Batman Begins (what was that called?), director Bryan Singer’s sequel would of been huge.  But, like I said: “depsite it’s flaws.”  I know many people weren’t happy with it.  I know the studio was disappointed in it.  I admit it could of been more.  It’s main problem, and I thank my friend Matt for pointing it out, Superman Returns was the greatest fan film ever made.  I mean, seriously, that’s all it was.  A fan film.  Made by Bryan Singer.  With a budget of 200 millions.  And I loved it.  I loved every single Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve reference in it.  And I really, and I mean really, loved every obscure Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey reference (you have to be a pretty hardcore nerd to spot them but they’re there.)  If I made a Superman movie… I would of made Superman Returns.

Okay, so it wasn’t the movie of the century.  It’s still Superman.  It’s still one of the most iconic characters ever conceived.  You’d think WB would just reboot the franchise.  Give up.  Start over.  Hire James McTeigue.  Hire Len Wiseman.  Hire anybody you want.  Give them money, force a super villian into the script, and make the damn movie.  Audiences would eat it up… right?  If X-Men Origins: Wolverine can pull a profit, any half-assed Superman movie should run away with the green too, right?  But I guess not.  I guess it just doesn’t make sense.  Why not reboot Red Dawn instead?  That’ll make the money.  Comic book movies are so 2008 anyway.  The genre is dead.  Who needs ’em.
