Superman vs. Superman: Our first look at Henry Cavill
August 7, 2011
Well, here it is folks, our first look at Henry Cavill in the title role of The Man of Steel, Zack Synder’s reboot of the Superman franchise. Just for shits and giggles, I’ve also included the first look we had at Brandon Routh as Superman in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. To be honest, between the two, I favor Routh and Singer’s costume. I’m not crazy about the colors and texture of Synder’s. Nor am I crazy about Cavill’s hair. BUT, admittedly, it’s just a sneak peak really. The lighting isn’t great and we really don’t have a good look at the costume. But… still… I dunnnnnooooo.

maybe i didn’t realize how bad the Routh costume was not moving, but it looks dated. the “S” looks like those puffy stickers we had as kids. anyways, these colors seem so odd in this still – it looks like they superimposed Routh’s head over a 1955 George Reeves and then colorized it.
at least the new version is contemporary without being Schumachered into a flaming-queer-Hasbro-action-figure-that-was-just-polished-with-lemon-Pledge-and-has-frigid-nipples look. besides, wasn’t everyone sad about the Spider-Man costume because of the same kind of texture …and it panned out on film. even The Dark Knight costume appears less cool in stills.
it’s gonna be fine.
in regards to the new design, i do think there is a lot more to it than we are seeing. Note the seam on his right outer thigh… and also on the left of his waist/chest… and his wrists. At first i thought those were wrinkles but they’re present on both arms. So… overall.. it’s certainly not terrible. Even the new S design doesn’t upset me. But his hair… sure is poofy.
i’m also pleased with the texture of the cape…. CLOTH. hopefully with a yellow S on the back again. as for the Superma Returns costume, Singer stated he was attempting to mix pretty much every cinematic superman costume ever made. And yes, the movie and costume design did pay a lot of homage to George Reeves AND the Fleischer cartoons… I mean, look at Routh’s pose (not to mention the art deco decor) and compare:
although i could see it, i guess i never imagined they would have purposefully designed it with the 50’s costume in mind. i’ll never really understand rebooting/modernizing a franchise only to regurgitate aspects of the older incarnations. we’ve already seen that. i mean, did we really need lou ferrigno in The Hulk? it just doesn’t work and feels like pandering…
like the Total Recall reboot: the dire concern over inclusion of the three-breasted hooker and which configuration her boobs should take. ya, that was awesome …when it was a surprise way back in 1990. you wanna get me excited, slash the prosthetic boob-making budget and just pay jessica biel to make an uncredited/surprise cameo and show her two o’natural. speaking of, check out Powder Blue @ 1:09. BOOM! and free crazy swayze with it.
but she’s so…. caucasian. hahahaha. where do you find this shit?!
well, you can’t spell caucasian without asian. my “feelers” are always out there …feelin’.
