Behind every one alive today stand thirty ghosts…

May 23, 2010

Tonight I spent Saturday night at home, alone.  Though not as bad as it sounds, I realized just how long it’s been since this has happened.  It kind of reminded me of my younger days, my nerdier days, back in high school, when — instead of boozing it up with chums — I’d sit at home with good books and my imagination.  My best friend back then… Sir Arthur C. Clarke.  Do you know how many times I’ve read 2001: A Space Odyssey?  Or watched the movie, for that matter?!  Well I don’t know either… but it’s a lot.  Whether I love the film or book more I simply cannot answer.  I hold them both so dear to my heart.  I actually have memories of reading the book WHILE watching the movie.  If I had had the movie soundtrack back then perhaps I would have played that in the background as well.  Made it a three-some.  Hmm… it’s not like I’m doing anything better right now…

DIGITAL ART_things I can’t get enough of

May 23, 2010

So I’m a big fan of digital art.  I’m a really big fan of sci-fi/fantasy digital art. It’s also a medium I find myself drawn to more and more as an artist.  Maybe one day I will have the time to truly dive into the medium, to learn the craft.  Maybe.  Someday.  Sigh.  In the meantime, I love to look through online collections.  It’s mind-blowing.  Many of the artists are conceptual artists… these are the people who George Lucas and James Cameron turn to to come up with and visualize their alien worlds and creatures (you didn’t really think Lucas was that creative, did you?)  Anyway, I look through their work because it inspires me.  Take one look for yourself and you’ll realize just how many stories there are to be told. Many of the pieces are themselves inspired by notable sci-fi movies and novels (Stewart — tons of Blade Runner nior — check it out) so it only seems natural that their work inspires me… almost like a “circle of life” of sorts… a circle of inspiration.  AND I’m babbling…

Here are a few I hand picked from CoolVibe, a cool digital art site.  I tend to be drawn to the more hard sci-fi illustrations but I’ve thrown in a few others I just think are cool (click the image to find artist info, etc.)   If you come across any yourself that blows your mind, share the link!

THE SHELTER_read & enjoy!!

May 18, 2010

I almost forgot to mention that The Shelter will now live here on my blog for all to read. First published in the February ’10 edition of The Legendary, an online collection of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, I’m really happy with how The Shelter turned out. It’s different, especially for me, and I’m really  surprised by how many people tell me that this story, of all the others, is their favorite of mine.  I’m always partial toward The Sorrow... but who am I to question my fans?

You can find the story here or just click on the image below… enjoy!!!

BATMAN 3_why robin (yes, the boy wonder) should be in it

May 17, 2010

So a few weeks ago the powers-that-be over at Warner Brothers announced the release date for the much-anticipated follow-up to The Dark Knight… that date is July 20, 2012… and I can’t f*cking wait!  BUT I HAVE TO… because it’s only 2010… sigh.  Luckily that leaves fanboys like me (and you… maybe?)  the opportunity to endlessly discuss such irrelevant-to-life topics as “what will the new movie’s title be?” and “should they recast the Joker” and “what should the new Batmobile look like?” Hurray!!  What fun we shall have!  And to get the ball rolling I proposition the first (of many) completely asinine questions: SHOULD ROBIN BE IN THE NEW BATMAN MOVIE?!

Burt Ward. Kicker of ass.

WALKING ON ELECTRIC AIR_more than a good read

May 14, 2010

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a book review, which makes it all the sweeter to write about Walking On Electric Air by Stephen Cubine. The book was a real change of pace compared to the sci-fi/fantasy fare I usually stick to but I’m really glad I had the opportunity to branch out a bit and take in something new. It actually makes me realize just how much I probably miss because I’m so stuck in the genres I think I like. So, with that said, this book doesn’t involve intergalactic war or time travel. Its neither post-apocalyptic nor alternate history. What this book is… is good. It’s very good, in fact.

BROKEN BELLS_music I stumbled across

May 10, 2010

So this band, Broken Bells, has been on my radar for a few weeks now but I finally took the plunge this weekend and bought their album.  So far, so good… I’m really digging it.  The album, just a few months old, is the collaboration of artist-producer Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) and James Mercer of The Shins.  Some of you have probably already heard their main single “The High Road” but for those that haven’t, enjoy…

IRON MAN 2_not disco enough

May 10, 2010

I saw Iron Man 2 tonight… and it sucked.  Sorry folks.  I’m not saying the film doesn’t have any entertainment value. It certainly stimulates the senses.  You see stuff happen, you watch people talk, and then shit explodes.  But I couldn’t help but wonder why… why was I watching this?  I’m not asking why this movie was made (money – and they got mine) but why was I being told this story. For all the flying mecha suits and gratuitous explosions, nothing really happened.

SPACE_we had so much to explore

May 7, 2010

Watch it with the audio — what the man says is fascinating.  Watch it in silence — the footage is haunting.  Or watch it to music of your own choice (I recommend the Gayane Ballet Suite) and mourn the end of space exploration.

We had so much to explore, only hope to discover, and our children to inspire. Now we have nothing.
